SNDBoston countdown: 6 days

Students win grants to attend SNDBoston
Fifteen visual journalism students from colleges and universities in the United States and Peru will attend the 2007 Society for News Design Annual Workshop & Exhibition with the assistance of the SND Foundation.

U.S. students receive grants of $250 and students from outside the United States $500 to help them travel to Boston for the 29th Annual Workshop, Oct. 11-13 at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel.

The students, who applied for their grants last spring, were selected on the basis of their leadership in visual journalism on campus by SND Education Director Julie Elman, Ohio University in Athens, and Diversity Director Javier Torres, The News Press in Fort Myers, Fla.

At the Annual Workshop, hosted this year by The Boston Globe, these students will assist the professional journalists and educators whose volunteer efforts produce SND's major annual event. About 700 visual journalists from around the world are already registered to attend SND Boston.

"The Society is always looking for ways to involve and serve students and educators. These are our future designers, artists, multimedia specialists -- in short, visual journalists," said Bill Gaspard, SND Foundation president. "We have a great interest in their futures because we care deeply about the future of our craft. The SND Foundation is happy to be home to many of our student programs."

The travel-grant recipients for 2007 are:
  1. Elizabeth Androuais, University of Missouri-Columbia
  2. Jessica Noel Berry, University of Utah
  3. Nathan Ehmke, Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln
  4. Victoria Hatterman, Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln
  5. Amanda Hoover, Ohio University in Athens

  10. Marcus Snyder, Middle Tennessee State University

  12. Todd Vogts, Wichita State University in Kansas
  13. Ting Wang, University of Miami
  14. Will Wooten, University of Miami

In addition, the Foundation provides $750 grants to underwrite Annual Workshop travel expenses for winners of annual student design competitions. This year's recipients are Michael Higdon, University of Nevada, Reno, and Travis Ricks, Michigan State University.

The SND Foundation also will host a free journalism education program Oct. 11 at the Park Plaza for some 150 students. At that event, which begins at 11 a.m., breaks for SND-sponsored meals, and ends at 5 p.m., professional journalists will provide students with design training, career advice and portfolio reviews.

We'll see all you students soon in Boston!
