SND/MSU Student Design
Contest winners announced

The results are in and some of the finest collegiate work in the country has been awarded in the SND/MSU Student Design Contest.

Winners are chosen in traditional design categories such as Front Pages, Features and Sports, Photojournalism and Illustrations. But there are also categories crucial to newspapering like Advertisements and Promotions - categories we don't normally see in most newspaper design competitions. The work is always outstanding, as you would expect.

The neat thing about this competition is how MSU faculty advisers Cheryl Pell and Darcy Greene turn it into an educational and networking experience for members of their SND student chapter. This year's competition was judged by some of the good folks at the Detroit Free Press. Past competitions have been judged by visual journalists at papers such as the National Post, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Chicago Tribune and The Times of Northwest Indiana - so the judging itself turns into a field trip for the student chapter, and one where the members can learn from and network with the judges.

The winning schools (by number of awards):
  1. Ohio University, 18
  2. Michigan State, 11
  3. Virginia Commonwealth, 7
  4. Illinois, 4
  5. Indiana, 4
  6. Miami (Fla.), 3
  7. Marietta (Ohio) College, 2
  8. North Carolina-Chapel Hill, 2
  9. Brigham Young, 1
  10. North Texas, 1
Some interesting tidbits from the '07 competition ...
  • Awards for SND Orlando Intern contestants Carrie Hoover (Intern first-place winner, heading to the San Jose Mercury News this summer) and Nina Mehta (Intern fifth-place winner, heading to the Indianapolis Star).
  • Virginia Commonwealth pulled off a sweep in the Advertisements category - the top three spots, plus the Honorable Mention spots. So if your ad departments are looking for upgrades in the design department, apparently you need to send recruiters over to Richmond!

  • Other sweeps? MSU swept the top three spots in the Front Page category. Ohio U swept the top three spots in the Features category.
So be sure to head over to the SND/MSU site to check out the winners of this year's competition, plus past competitions.

Missouri's College Newspaper Design contest
will also be unveiling its winners this week

Via NewsDesigner ...

Mark Friesen of NewsDesigner (oh, and the Oregonian), Kristin Lenz of the Hartford Courant and Scott Goldman of the Indy Star (and also SND prez) are now judging the University of Missouri's annual College Newspaper Design contest, with winners already trickling out. The contest names the College Newspaper Designers of the year for daily and non-daily publications, and those winners get free admission to SNDBoston! Stay tuned to see who comes out on top.

And with both these contests showing off the winners, let the recruiting begin!
