An immigrant artist's journey

Kudos to Severiano Galvan of The Denver Post for his sketchbook, graphics and video diary work on Fortress America, a recent four-day series that looked at undocumented immigration to the U.S. along the border with Mexico.

The graphics journalist, who himself crossed that border without the proper papers some 35 years ago, revisits his past and shows the struggle many from Mexico face as the U.S. builds walls and trains agents to bar its southern door. Galvan's sketches are beautifully rendered, hearing him talk about his journey is moving, and the way we begin to see a new picture of border politics through his eyes is especially insightful.

Congratulations to the paper for seeing the value in employing the skills of one of its visual journalists to tell an important story in a new way.
