Malofiej 15:
Join us for live reports

The SND International Web Desk is headed for Spain. My Mercury News colleague Jonathon Berlin, who is also the editor of Design mag, will be my traveling companion and co-blogger as we decamp for the welcoming environs of Pamplona and the 15th Malofiej Infographics World Summit. If past summits are any indication, Malofiej 15 should be a blast, a combo of terrific training and great global gathering. We can't wait to soak it all in!

We'll take off first for London, where we will hang with Robb Montgomery of VizEds, who just happens to be in Britain, Nina Mehta, one of "The Intern" winners from Orlando who is spending the semester abroad, and our old pal Michael Agar, graphics editor at The Observer and all-around swell guide.

Visiting London is always an amazing experience because so many media projects there have been and continue to shake up the world.
The Guardian and all the smart energy of its transformation, of course. There are the revolutionary changes afoot at The Telegraph. And we're big fans of the work at BBC News in multimedia. So expect that we'll muse on what we see in the UK.

The main event, though, will be unfolding at the Universidad de Navarra thanks to the hard work of the school and SND's Spanish chapter.

Graphics pros from around the globe will be on hand when the workshop portion of Malofiej 15 starts on Sunday. Geoff McGhee of The New York Times, Juan Velasco of National Geographic and Javier Zarracina of The Boston Globe will be instructors for the hands-on sessions.

We'll do our best to get the download from the three gurus when we arrive on Wednesday, just in time for the party that opens the World Summit (hey, no one said this has to be all work!).

We promise (twist our arms) to raise a glass to John Grimwade, the longtime "Show, Don't Tell" leader from Conde Nast who cannot be there this year. John's staying in New York City to launch the business mag Portfolio, and while we will definitely miss his effortless leadership, stellar style and lively presence, we can't wait to see the work he's doing for the new title.

So stay tuned for The Blog's reports from the road. We're brushing up on our Spanish, and we'll do our very best to give you the lowdown. Charla a usted pronto.

Greetings from Warsaw!

I wish you safe journeys Matt, JB and all visual editors headed to Spain for the workshop.

I have just placed a large jumbo jet image on the home page of VizEds in honor of all our travel this week - Charles Apple is this minute now heading off to Manila as I type this.

Who ever would have thought?

Tuesday we meet in London - May I suggest a cool little place on Charlotte Street?

Who would have thought indeed, eh? Pretty wild for some kids from central Illinois.

It will be interesting to hear from you about how it went in Poland, since the idea of online community is so vital right to news orgs.

See you soon in London! (Downloaded the map already to my handheld.)
